Arthur Foley Winnington-Ingram  (1858-1939) - Winnington Close

Arthur Foley Winnington-Ingram was the Bishop of London during the establishment of Hampstead Garden Suburb, after whom Ingram Avenue, Bishops’ Avenue, and Winnington Road are named. This makes him the individual with the most Suburb roads dedicated to him. Winnington-Ingram’s episcopal career began in 1897 as the second suffragan Bishop of Stepney. Due to his oratorical skill, he quickly gained a following as a preacher and rose through the ranks of the clergy, eventually becoming the Bishop of London and even Privy Counsellor to the crown. He is best known today for his staunch support for the British war effort during the First World War through patriotic speeches and writing, which garnered both criticism and praise.
