Vivian Way, Totnes Walk and Devon Rise are named after Henry Vivian (1868- 1930)

Henry Vivian was a prominent English trade unionist, Liberal Party politician and campaigner for industrial democracy and co-partnership, especially noted for his work in co-partnership housing. With three roads in the suburb named after him, Vivian way, Totnes Walk and Devon Rise (allusions to his Devonshire Constituency), Vivian is largely regarded as the pioneer of the Co-partnership housing movement, as well as being a founder Board Member of the Hampstead Garden Suburb trust. Born in Cornwood, Devon, Vivian was the son of a carpenter and followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a skilled carpenter and trade unionist. An advocate for the cooperative movement, Vivian believed in co-partnership, where workers shared profits and had a stake in their industries. He was a leader in the co-partnership housing movement, helping develop Brentham Garden Suburb, which became a model for urban planning, and he promoted similar schemes in Canada. Politically, Vivian was a Free Trade Liberal who opposed socialism. He was elected as a Lib-Lab MP for Birkenhead in 1906, where he supported self-reliance and minimal state intervention. He lost his seat in 1910 after facing opposition from socialists. Vivian remained active in public service, supporting the League of Nations and serving on various government committees related to housing and urban planning.
