Ronald Cleghorn was born in Belfast; in the evenings he sang in local clubs, using Carroll as his stage name. He moved to London in 1953 and enlivened show business pages in the tabloid press during the 1950s and 1960s. His 1959 marriage to Millicent Martin was the highlight of the show business calendar for that year; they divorced in 1965 partly due to Carroll’s compulsive gambling. He declared bankruptcy in 1974 and opened a food stall in Camden market.

Represented the UK twice at the Eurovision Song Contest: he came fourth in both 1962 and 1963 with hits Ring-A-Ding Girl and Say Wonderful Things
His best known track, a cover of Roses Are Red (My Love), climbed to number three in the charts, 1962
Attempted to break the record of political candidates to poll the fewest votes by becoming a candidate for the Emerald Rainbow Islands Dream Ticket party in Hampstead and Highgate, 1997. Ended up garnering 141 votes, far higher than the fewest ever recorded thus failed to break record
