  • BBC Orchestra performed one of his first compositions when he was only twelve years old
  • Toured South America as a part of a double piano act with Norman Yarlett (1937)
  • Appointed conductor of the BBC Dance Orchestra (1944)
  • Arranged and composed soundtracks for nearly 200 films (1946-1975)
  • Advocated popularizing music, commenting that ‘West Side Story should be in the same programme as Beethoven’
  • Won a Melody Maker competition for his jazz chorus arrangement in 1930
  • Joined the Royal Air Force during WWII when he was involved in the entertainment of servicemen
