Born in 1856 Henrietta Barnett founded the Hampstead Garden Suburb in 1906 as an area to the north of London with affordable housing and green spaces so the working clas did not have to live in the slums she experienced in Whitechapel. 

Early views of the free church
The Hampstead Garden Suburb Free Church, located in Central Square with St Judes Church and Henrietta Barnett School nearby. Set up in 1910 it has been active in the community for over a century.

Born in 1844 Samuel Barnett was a clergyman and social reformer, known particularly for his work in creating Toynbee Hall and the origins of Hampstead Garden Suburb, along with his wife Henrietta.
