These are a series of photos from the Archive Trust which display the area we all now know as Hampstead Garden Suburb, before it was ever built. These photos give us an insight into just how rural and open the area was before construction. Many of the photos are captioned by Henrietta Barnett herself showing her hands on approach to realising her dream.

The Hampstead Garden Suburb Archives Trust is a registered charity, known as Suburb Archives. It is responsible for ensuring that the archives of the suburb are properly cared for and are accessible to all.

Henrietta Barnett

Born in 1856 Henrietta Barnett founded the Hampstead Garden Suburb in 1906 as an area to the north of London with affordable housing and green spaces so the working clas did not have to live in the slums she experienced in Whitechapel.

Toynbee Hall

Toynbee Hall, Whitechapel, was set up by Samuel and Henrietta Barnett in 1884 as part of their efforts for social reform. It housed university students and working men together to break down social barriers and for future leaders to be raised with poverty face to face.

Whitechapel

These photos represent Henrietta and Samuel Barnett's time in Whitechapel where he was the vicar of St Jude's. Without their experiences of the harsh poverty in the area they may not have been inspired to create the Hampstead Garden Suburb to help alleviate such cramped and poor conditions.
